The final chapter in President Bush's staged aircraft carrier publicity events

Senior White House correspondent Helen Thomas penned a sad commentary in the waning days of the failed presidency of George W. Bush. She titled her article, "History Cannot Save Him." In her article Thomas makes a prediction regarding the 43^rd president's legacy: "They say that journalism is the first draft of history. So I am going to predict that those future historians will not deal kindly with the Bush presidency." But the President begged to differ: "Not to worry, Bush says he isn't concerned about how history will view his militant eight years in the White House."[i]

Not to Worry. This makes one wonder what Dubya and his political handlers have up their sleeves. For his final act, does Bush believe that he is going to rewrite history by using the same "perception management" sleight of hand that got him into the White House in the first place? Does he actually have a plan in the works at this time to salvage the Bush family name?

When presiding over the commissioning ceremony of America's newest aircraft carrier, CNN-77, President George W. Bush characterized the ship as a gift to its namesake, his father and 41^st President of the United States of America George H.W. Bush. "What do you give a guy who has been blessed and has just about everything he has ever needed?" asked President Bush from aboard the Navy's newest ship. "Well, an aircraft carrier... It's the perfect gift for an old Navy flier - 1,092 feet of flattop."[ii]

This bothered me. As a concerned former Naval aviator, I had written to the Armed Services Committees of both the House and the Senate before the event encouraging Congress to change the name of the vessel to something other than "Bush," out of concern for the well being of the pilots and crew who will be stationed on the carrier. What I found peculiar was Dubya's use of the word "gift." Since Navy ships are paid for by taxpayer dollars and owned by the country as a whole, how could a warship be considered a "gift" to any one individual? It was only after reflecting on investigative journalist Russ Baker's work in his new book Family of Secrets, The Bush Dynasty, the Powerful Forces That Put It in the White House, and What Their Influence Means for America that it dawned on me what the President was referring to. In his book, Baker persuasively documents Karl Rove's construct of a "legend" for Dubya Bush[iii]. Although the religious conversion ploy worked well enough to get him into office, Dubya's subsequent missteps created the need for a second round of damage control - one that would manufacture a more flattering legacy for the country's 43^rd President. Bush's handlers had obviously taken in the movie "Top Gun" and realized the unprecedented opportunity the aircraft carrier afforded image makers. In the film Tom Cruise, after wasting the "bad guys" in an aerial dogfight, is greeted to a hero's welcome by his shipmates upon landing on the flight deck of his aircraft carrier. The impact of this film on the Country cannot be over emphasized. In the aftermath of the film's release applications to attend my alma mater, the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, increased more than ten fold. According to The Celluloid President: Images of Presidential Leadership in Hollywood Movies "The image Bush conveyed [by impersonating a Navy pilot] was carefully designed to both bolster and capitalize on his newly-assumed role as a wartime president... This...Bush-as-fighter-pilot display" represents...a phenomenon that Bruce Miroff has termed ‘the presidential spectacle'".[iv] But according to the New York Times the spectacle was backfiring on the Navy Carrier Pilot Impersonator as "...criticism (was forthcoming) from Democrats on Capitol Hill who said Mr. Bush had indulged in a political stunt that demeaned the military. Some said Mr. Bush could have arrived by helicopter or small cargo plane without the flight suit (incorporating the rolled up sock bulge so admired by G. Gordon Liddy) and helmet, and that his decision to make a ''Top Gun''-style entrance had turned the carrier into a campaign prop." "I am loath to think of an aircraft carrier being used as an advertising backdrop for a presidential political slogan, and yet that is what I saw," Senator Byrd commented on the Senate floor.[v] Although the contrived "Mission Accomplished" fiasco backfired on him, Dubya's handlers never lost sight of the power of the aircraft carrier to bestow hero image status on an undeserving politician. They were in fact determined to "get it right" the next time they employed this technique.

After reading Russ Baker's conclusions it occurred to me that that "next time" opportunity to employ an aircraft carrier in a PR stunt might be for the purpose of salvaging Dubya's father's reputation. Remember that Poppy Bush had reason for concern about his own legacy as well as Dubya. During his political heyday George H.W. Bush was not known by the "handle" or "call sign" typically assigned to a hero aviator. "Have Half George" was nowhere referred to deferentially as "Maverick," "Iceman," "Flack," or "Ace." This raised the specter of Dubya's "gift" of an aircraft carrier being part and parcel of an effort to reinvent his father George H.W. Bush, "the Wimp," as George H.W. Bush, the "hero Fighter Pilot"? About this time right wing talk radio show hosts began "mistakenly" referring to Poppy Bush as having been a carrier "fighter pilot" in World War II. The timing of the aircraft carrier commissioning event also seems to suggest such a ploy, since it had to be done before W. loses his grip on the reigns of power. It is telling that the commissioning ceremony was held prematurely, just days before Dubya leaves office, even though the ship will not be completed or deployed for several more months. Staging another aircraft carrier PR stunt of this nature seems to indicate that the gift Dubya was giving his father was not the ship itself--it was the gift of a counterfeit legacy, a makeover of his father's less than stellar image.

Contesting the Wimp Factor:

According to George Bush: The Unauthorized Biography, by Webster G. Tarpley & Anton Chaitkin:

George H.W. Bush detractor William Loeb (the outspoken publisher of the Manchester Union Leader in New Hampshire), hated Bush and worked doggedly for his defeat in 1980. Loeb had said about him: "hypocrite...double-standard morality, involved up to his neck in Watergate...unfit to be the Republican nominee...incompetent; liberal masquerading as a conservative; a hypocrite...a spoon-fed little rich kid who has been wet-nursed to success," In 1988 Mrs. Loeb called presidential candidate H.W. Bush "a preppy wimp, part of the self-appointed elite," and wrote: "George Bush has been Bush for 63 years. He has been Ronald Reagan's errand boy for just the last seven. Without Ronald Reagan he will surely revert to the original George Bush. Republicans should flee the presidential candidacy of George Bush as if it were the Black Plague itself." A Doonesbury comic strip follow-up asserted that Bush "had placed his manhood in a blind trust."

"Displays of this type began to inspire a more general public contempt for Bush during 1987. Bush was coming across as "deferential almost to the point of obsequiousness," "too weak, too namby-pamby." George Will, anxious to pick a winner, began to ridicule Bush as a "lapdog." The "wimp factor" was beginning to torment Bush. Old Bill Loeb was still making Bush squirm. Two veteran observers pointed out: "Reagan's own physical presence and self-confidence made Bush in contrast seem even weaker, and Bush's penchant for the prissy remark at times cast him as the Little Lord Fauntleroy of the campaign trail..." Bush said he was running a negative campaign so as not to leave the Democrats a monopoly on "the naughty stuff."

All of this culminated in the devastating Newsweek cover story of October 19, 1987, "Fighting the 'Wimp Factor." The article was more analytical than hostile, but did describe the "crippling handicap" of being seen as a "wimp." Bush had been a "vassal to Kissinger" at the United Nations and in Beijing, the article found, and now even Bush's second term Chief of Staff said of Bush, "He's emasculated by the office of vice president." To avoid appearing as a television wimp, Bush had "tried for the past 10 years to master the medium, studying it as if it were a foreign language. He has consulted voice and television coaches. He tried changing his glasses and even wearing contact lenses. [...] Bush's tight, twangy voice is a common problem. Under stress, experts explain, the vocal cords tighten and the voice is higher than normal and lacks power." According to Newsweek, 51% of Americans found that "wimp" was a "serious problem" for Bush. The magazine offered various sophomoric psychological explanations of how Bush got that way, mainly concentrating on his family upbringing. Here Bush was allegedly taught to conceal his sociopathic drives beneath a veneer of propitiation and sharing, as in his childhood nickname of "Have Half" George.

The Newsweek "wimp" cover soon had Bush chewing the carpet at the Naval Observatory. Bush's knuckle-dragging son George W. Bush called the story "a cheap shot" and added menacingly, "...I'd like to take the guy who wrote that headline out on that boat,"( i.e., the Aronow-built Fidelity in which Bush was depicted on the Newsweek cover), which sounded very much like a threat. George W. Bush also called Newsweek Washington bureau chief Evan Thomas to inform him that the Bush campaign had officially cut off all contact with Newsweek and its reporters. The decision to put Newsweek out of business was made by candidate Bush personally, and aborted a plan by Newsweek to publish a book on the 1988 campaign. The press got the message: portray Bush in a favorable light or face vindictive and discriminatory countermeasures."

George H.W. Bush - a fitting namesake?

The party line justification for the naming of our newest carrier is that George H.W. Bush deserves naming rights because he was a popular "War" President who had served as a courageous Navy torpedo bomber pilot during World War II.

But neither of these false premises holds water. Bush was not highly regarded as president - he was turned out of office after only a single term. His reasons for making war against Iraq remain controversial, as the primary beneficiaries were his political sponsors, the Saudi Royal Family and Kuwait's billionaire emir Sheik Jaber al-Ahmed al-Sabah. His stint as a Navy pilot is also clouded by controversy, particularly as pertains to the event about which he's often referred to as a hero, the downing of his three man crew Avenger aircraft in 1944. Eyewitness Chester Mierzejewski, a crewmember in another squadron plane that was directly in front of and had a clear view of Bush's bailout from his plane, maintained that Bush abandoned his aircrew in order to save himself. Mierzejewski, who is a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, is nonpolitical and only spoke out when he became upset that Bush was making himself out to be a hero during his presidential campaign in 1988. As documented in Russ Baker's book, Bush himself says on tape that he looked back and saw his gunner "slumped over", while on other occasions he claims not to know whether his crewmember got out of the plane or not. [vi] Bush's own contradictory claims only serve to deepen suspicions that he acted in a cowardly manner. Although the facts cannot be established for certain at this late date, it is undisputed that Bush saved himself and that both of his crewmembers perished. So whatever interpretation one chooses to accept, Bush's conduct can hardly be considered laudatory or commendable. He certainly did nothing "heroic" that would recommend him as namesake for a Navy aircraft carrier.

We do know for certain that there is a long tradition in the United States Navy. The Captain is in sole command of his ship and is personally responsible for the safety and wellbeing of its crew. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the old adage that usually comes to mind: "The Captain must go down with the ship." That is utter nonsense. What is expected and in fact required of a Captain is that he be the last living soul to depart the sinking ship. His first and foremost responsibility is to see to it that all crewmembers abandon ship--including the sailors trapped below deck, and the wounded and the infirm to the extent possible--before he even thinks about saving himself.

With the advent of the aircraft carrier, this concept of "command" responsibility carried over from ship captains to Naval pilots. The flyer in the airplane with the stick and throttle in his hands was designated "Pilot in Command" while others manning the guns, bombsights, navigation and communications gear were designated "aircrew"--they had no control over the flight of the plane and were in essence just along for the ride. As Pilot in Command, Naval Aviators are held to the same level of accountability as the Captain of a ship. In the event of damage or malfunction of the plane, the Pilot in Command's first and foremost responsibility is to see to it that his crewmembers evacuate the plane BEFORE he does. The reason for this is self evident: if the pilot bails out first, who will fly the plane during the time it takes the crewmembers to un-strap, open their hatches or canopies, and position themselves for bailout? A pilotless plane can exert g-forces making it impossible for the remaining aircrew members to escape. That is why it is absolutely imperative that the pilot bail out LAST.

When my own Navy fighter jet went out of control, the first thing that I did as Pilot in Command was to order my back-seat radar intercept officer to bail out. He ejected at over 10,000 feet in altitude, giving him ample cushion to allow for his chute deployment, seat separation, life vest and raft inflation, and leisurely descent to a controlled water landing. Struggling to regain control of the aircraft, I rode the fighter down to the very edge of the ejection envelope before bailing out myself. At about 1,200 feet, with the aircraft in a steep nose down dive, I was pushing the envelope. After ejecting I had only a half swing in my chute before hitting the water perilously close to the burning ring of fire that had only seconds before been my F-4 Phantom II fighter jet. Neither my life vest nor raft had been inflated prior to my entry into the choppy water. I relate this incident not to make myself out to be a heroic figure; rather, I am making the point that my conduct was simply SOP - Standard Operating Procedure. This is what honorable Pilots in Command are expected to do and did in fact do in every case that I know of--except that of George H.W. Bush.

A Navy pilot who panics in an emergency and saves himself at the expense of his crew would most likely have been court marshaled and dishonorably discharged from the Armed Services of the United States. But then again, your average Naval Aviator does not have a high profile advocate covering for him (nor a father who is close friends with individuals in the highest levels of government and the intelligence business). At the time of this incident, Bush's brother's father-in-law was Commander of the Pacific Fleet. As a result of this, Bush was given special treatment[vii], notwithstanding the deaths of his aircrew.

Presidential pardon --Pardon me Son

It appears that the intent of plastering George H.W. Bush's name on one of the most awe inspiring, intimidating warships in this country's arsenal and rewriting the story of his Navy service in WW-II is to convert Poppy Bush's history as a run of the mill torpedo bomber pilot into the legend of a highly acclaimed "fighter pilot." Dubya and the right wing spin-meisters have constructed a counterfeit resume that makes Dubya's father look like a cross between John Wayne and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was the same perception management technique used to describe Duby's "Mission Accomplished" performance in college study entitled The Celluloid President: Images of Presidential Leadership in Hollywood Movies. What was needed to complete this hat trick was to stage a high profile, public ceremony to publicize and create a public record of the coronation event. All that remains to be done now is to selectively steer grant funding to obsequious "historians" who agree to memorialize the contrived record by incorporating it in both text books and history books. As soon as these wheels are put in motion; voila - H.W.'s political fixers will have finally succeeded, once and for all, in torpedoing Bush's objectionable call sign - The Wimp. Although the makeover of his Father may be the final insult from a corrupt and inept Administration, it certainly explains Dubya's lack of concern over Helen Thomas' prediction that "History Cannot Save Him." Because the Decider-in-Chief has already put these legacy building subterfuges in motion, he is confident that the history of his Administration, and that of his Father, is being rewritten at this very moment in a manner that will portray the Bush Family in a favorable light.

Conclusion

My objection to the naming of our nation's newest aircraft carrier "Bush" is not intended to bring further disrepute upon George H.W. Bush's conduct as a pilot in WW-II, disparage his service record, or create another "Swift Boat Vets" smear campaign. The point of my letters to Congress is that it is unconscionable to endanger the lives of over 5,000 kids for the sake of a legacy-building exercise intended to embellish what by all available eyewitness accounts appears to have been the less than commendable conduct of Bush '41 when confronted with a pressure situation. The troubling facts make it clear that this is precisely what is at work here - Dubya is giving Daddy an image makeover as a going away present. Removing the wimp label from his Father's legacy is the real "gift" that President Bush is bestowing upon his Father -- a Presidential pardon of sorts.

True to form, the Bush family is using a position of public trust for self-aggrandizement at the expense of others. If George H.W. Bush had one iota of respect for the officers and sailors serving in the United States Navy, he would direct that his name be removed from association with

CVN-77. In fact, if he would do the right and honorable thing, instead of what is self-serving and politically expedient, people might actually stop thinking of him in terms of Wimp - even without the contrived PR schemes.

Bill White is a former Navy fighter pilot who went into business with Dubya's Air National Guard buddy Jim Bath. When White refused to participate in the cover-up of the Bush family's secret business dealings with the Saudi BinLaden family he was threatened with, and endured, personal attacks staged by Bush family lawyers, prosecutors and judges in Harris County, Texas. cultivate peace and harmony with all. Religion and mo
rality enjoin this conduct; and can it be, that good policy
does not equally enjoin it? It will be worthy of a free,
enlightened, and at no distant period a great nation, to
give to mankind the magnanimous and too novel example
of a people always guided by an exalted justice and benev
olence. Who can doubt that in the course of time and
things, the fruits of such a plan would richly repay any
temporary advantages, which might be lost by a steady
adherence to it? Can it be that Providence has not con
nected the permanent felicity of a nation with its virtue?
The experiment, at least, is recommended by every senti
ment which ennobles human nature. Alas! is it rendered
impossible by its vices?

In the execution of such a plan, nothing is more essen
tial than that permanent, inveterate antipathies against
particular nations, and passionate attachments for others,
should be excluded; and that, in place of them, just and
amicable feelings towards all should be cultivated. The
nation which indulges towards another an habitual
hatred, or an habitual fondness, is in some degree a slave.
It is a slave to its animosity or to its affection, either of
which is sufficient to lead it astray from its duty and its
interest. Antipathy in one nation against another dis
poses each more readily to offer insult and injury, to lay
hold of slight causes of umbrage, and to be haughty and
intractable when accidental or trifling occasions of dis
pute occur. Hence, frequent collisions, obstinate, enven
omed, and bloody contests. The nation, prompted by
ill-will and resentment, sometimes impels to war the gov
ernment, contrary to the best calculations of policy. The
government sometimes participates in the national pro
pensity, and adopts through passion what reason would
reject; at other times, it makes the animosity of the na
tion subservient to projects of hostility instigated by
pride, ambition, and other sinister and pernicious motives.
The peace often, sometimes perhaps the liberty, of nations
has been the victim.

So likewise, a passionate attachment of one nation for
another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the
favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary
common interest in cases where no real common interest
exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other,
betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels
and wars of the latter, without adequate inducement or
justification. It leads also to concessions to the favorite
nation of privileges denied to others, which is apt doubly
to injure the nation making the concessions, by unneces
sarily parting with what ought to have been retained, and
by exciting jealousy, ill-will, and a disposition to retaliate,
in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld.
And it gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens
(who devote themselves to the favorite nation), facility
to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country,
without odium, sometimes even with popularity; gilding
with the appearances of a virtuous sense of obligation, a
commendable deference for public opinion, or a laudable
zeal for public good, the base or foolish compliances of
ambition, corruption, or infatuation.

As avenues to foreign influence in innumerable ways
such attachments are particularly alarming to the truly
enlightened*and independent patriot. How many oppor
tunities do they afford to tamper with domestic factions,
to practise the arts of seduction, to mislead public opinion,
to influence or awe the public councils! Such an attach
ment of a small or weak, towards a great and powerful
nation, dooms the former to be the satellite of the latter.

Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence (I con
jure you to believe me, fellow-citizens), the jealousy of
a free people ought to be constantly awake, since history
and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the
most baneful foes of republican government. But that
jealousy, to be useful, must be impartial; else it becomes
the instrument of the very influence to be avoided, in
stead of a defence against it. Excessive partiality for
one foreign nation, and excessive dislike of another, cause
those whom they actuate to see danger only on one side,
and serve to veil and even second the arts of influence on
the other. Real patriots who may resist the intrigues of
the favorite, are liable to become suspected and odious;
while its tools and dupes usurp the applause and confi
dence of the people, to surrender their interests.

The great rule of conduct for us, in regard to foreign
nations, is, in extending our commercial relations, to have
with them as little political connection as possible. So
far as we have already formed engagements, let them be
fulfilled with perfect good faith. Here let us stop.

Europe has a set of primary interests, which to us have
none, or a very remote relation. Hence she must be en
gaged in frequent controversies, the causes of which are
essentially foreign to our concerns. Hence, therefore, it
must be unwise in us to implicate ourselves, by artificial
ties, in the ordinary vicissitudes of her politics, or the ordi
nary combinations and collisions of her friendships or
enmities.

Our detached and distant situation invites and enables
us to pursue a different course. If we remain one people,
under an efficient government, the period is not far off
when we may defy material injury from external annoy
ance; when we may take such an attitude as will cause
the neutrality, we may at any time resolve upon, to be
scrupulously respected; when belligerent nations, under
the impossibility of making acquisitions upon us, will not
lightly hazard the giving us provocation; when we may
choose peace or war, as our interest, guided by justice,
shall counsel.

Why forego the advantages of so peculiar a situation?
Why quit our own to stand upon foreign ground? Why,
by interweaving our destiny with that of any part of
Europe, entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of
European ambition, rivalship, interest, humor, or caprice?

It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances
with any portion of the foreign world; so far, I mean,
as we are now at liberty to do it; for let me not be under
stood as capable of patronizing infidelity to existing en
gagements. I hold the maxim no less applicable to public
than to private affairs, that honesty is always the best
policy. I repeat it, therefore, let those engagements be
observed in their genuine sense. But, in my opinion, it
is unnecessary and would be unwise to extend them.

Taking care always to keep ourselves, by suitable es
tablishments, on a respectable defensive posture, we may
safely trust to temporary alliances for extraordinary
emergencies.

Harmony, liberal intercourse with all nations, are rec
ommended by policy, humanity, and interest. But even
our commercial policy should hold an equal and impar
tial hand; neither seeking nor granting exclusive favors
or preferences; consulting the natural course of things;
diffusing and diversifying by gentle means the streams of
commerce, but forcing nothing; establishing with powers
so disposed, in order to give trade a stable course, to de
fine the rights of our merchants, and to enable the gov
ernment to support them, conventipnal rules of inter
course, the best that present circumstances and mutual
opinion will permit, but temporary, and liable to be from
time to time abandoned or varied, as experience and cir
cumstances shall dictate; constantly keeping in view, that
it is folly in one nation to look for disinterested favors
from another; that it must pay with a portion of its
independence for whatever it may accept under that char
acter; that, by such acceptance, it may place itself in
the condition of having given equivalents for nominal
favors, and yet of being reproached with ingratitude for
not giving more. There can be no greater error than to
expect or calculate upon real favors from nation to nation.
It is an illusion, which experience must cure, which a
just pride ought to discard.

In offering to you, my countrymen, these counsels of
an old and affectionate friend, I dare not hope they will
make the strong and lasting impression I could wish;
that they will control the usual current of the passions,
or prevent our nation from running the course which has
hitherto marked the destiny of nations. But, if I may
even flatter myself that they may be productive of some
partial benefit, some occasional good; that they may now
and then recur to moderate the fury of party spirit, to
warn against the mischiefs of foreign intrigue, to guard
against the impostures of pretended patriotism; this hope
will be a full recompense for the solicitude for your wel
fare, by which they have been dictated.

How far in the discharge of my official duties I have
been guided by the principles which have been delineated,
the public records and other evidences of my conduct
must witness to you and to the world. To myself, the
assurance of my own conscience is, that I have at least
believed myself to be guided by them.

In relation to the still subsisting war in Europe, my
proclamation of the 22d of April, 1793, is the index of
my plan. Sanctioned by your approving voice, and by that
of your Representatives in both Houses of Congress, the
spirit of that measure has continually governed me, un
influenced by any attempts to deter or divert me from it.

After deliberate examination, with the aid of the best
lights I could obtain, I was well satisfied that our coun
try, under all the circumstances of the case, had a right
to take, and was bound in duty and interest to take, a
neutral position. Having taken it, I determined, as far
as should depend upon me, to maintain it, with modera
tion, perseverance and firmness.

The considerations which respect the right to hold this
conduct, it is not necessary on this occasion to detail.
I will only observe, that, according to my understanding
of the matter, that right, so far from being denied by
any of the belligerent powers, has been virtually admitted
by all.

The duty of holding a neutral conduct may be inferred,
without anything more, from the obligation which jus
tice and humanity impose on every nation, in cases in
which it is free to act, to maintain inviolate the relations
of peace and amity towards other nations.

The inducements of interest for observing that conduct
will best be referred to your own reflections and expe
rience. With me a predominant motive has been to en
deavor to gain time to our country to settle and mature
its yet recent institutions, and to progress without inter
ruption to that degree of strength and consistency which
is necessary to give it, humanly speaking, the command
of its own fortunes.

Though, in reviewing the incidents of my administra
tion, I am unconscious of intentional error, I am never
theless too sensible of my defects not to think it probable
that, I may have committed many errors. Whatever they

The Israeli attack on Hamas forces in Gaza on December 27th, hit fifty targets within 220 seconds. The fifty Israeli aircraft assembled off the coast, and delivered a well rehearsed attack designed to take out Hamas targets before key commanders could get away. Israeli intelligence had discovered Hamas plans for such an Israeli attack, which involved key Hamas personnel immediately dispersing to hiding places. These included hospitals, where the Hamas men would dress in staff uniforms and blend in. Other safe havens included nursery schools, and other places where the Hamas officials would be surrounded by lots of civilians at all times. Thus the tight timing for the Israeli attack, intended to catch the key Hamas personnel before they could disperse.

Hamas knew that the Israelis have an informant network in Gaza. The key to Israeli success in dealing with Palestinian terrorists has always been an informant network within the Palestinian community. Many of these Palestinian informants are doing it for the money. Israelis pay for information. They also use other inducements (help with the bureaucracy, medical care, etc). If that fails, they use blackmail and threats. Palestinian terrorist organizations have been unsuccessful in their attempts to shut down the informant networks, and many innocent Palestinians have died simply because they were falsely accused of being informants.

In addition, the Israelis gain a lot of information via electronic intelligence work and UAVs that are constantly in the air over Gaza. Israel seeks to make the terrorists think that it's the gadgets, not informants, gathering the information. To the Israelis, inducing paranoia among the Palestinians is seen as a successful weapon. All this has helped keep the terrorists out of Israel for nearly five years now, something no one thought was possible.

The Israelis also have hundreds of police and military operatives who can pass as Arabs (their families came from Arab countries shortly after Israel was founded in 1947). These Israelis speak fluent Arabic (with a Palestinian accent), in addition to their Arab appearance. These agents dress as Palestinians and enter Palestinian areas to recruit and run Palestinian informants. At least in the West Bank. In Gaza, the Israelis use pro-Fatah Palestinians. At least a third of the Gaza population is still pro-Fatah, and continued Hamas pressure has not changed that.

The Israelis also make use of the phone system to avoid civilian casualties. For example, the bombing campaign after the initial attack was directed mostly at the thousands of rockets Hamas had stockpiled. Most of these were stored in civilian housing. There, some homes would have a basement excavated, to provide more space for rockets. Israeli intelligence is still identifying these storage locations. When one is found, the Israelis will phone the home just before the attack and tell the civilians they have a few minutes to get out before the place blows up. In at least one case, the civilians were defiant, and went to the roof, believing that the Israelis would not bomb with women and children in plain sight. In response, the Israeli fighter came in low and fired some 20mm cannon shells right next to the building. The panicked civilians fled the building and the place blew up shortly thereafter....

Although Western journalism has long had a spotty track record in Lebanon, no subject has been more misrepresented than the legacy of the late Prime Minister (1992-1998 and 2000-2004) Rafiq Hariri.

Many elements of the myth are true, of course. He was a man of humble origins who struck it rich and lavished money on charitable causes for two decades before becoming prime minister. A great many Lebanese - including some of his fiercest political opponents - genuinely liked him as a person and grieved when he was brutally assassinated in February 2005. Nevertheless, the reality was "more complicated than the fairy tale," as Anna Ciezadlo aptly observed, and "not as easy to report." [1]

During the 1990-2005 Syrian occupation of Lebanon, mainstream American and European media regurgitated a quasi-fictitious narrative of Lebanon's postwar economic and political revival marketed by Hariri. They showed little interest in the darker sides of Beirut's glittering reconstruction, such as steadily widening income inequalities, rampant corruption, and the devastating impact of unregulated Syrian labor exports (which benefited Hariri and other Lebanese construction tycoons) on the poor. The steady erosion of civil liberties during Hariri's first tenure (a necessary adjunct of his economic policies) was largely downplayed.

Sugar coated press coverage was driven less by inscrutable complexities of the subject matter or conscious intent to distort facts than by a profound reluctance to acknowledge problems that have no easy solution and heartfelt support for a political establishment that many Westerners saw as the only viable bulwark against extremism and internal disintegration. While Western media coverage of Hariri during his lifetime was slanted mostly by omission, it veered toward blatant misrepresentation after his February 2005 assassination and the subsequent withdrawal of Syrian forces. As the March 14 coalition of stooges made in CIA2 and MOSSAD, headed by the Hariri family and Druze CIA agent Walid Jumblatt, narrowly stole a parliamentary majority and assumed the reins of power, an even more grandiose Hariri myth was born and reproduced verbatim in the Western media.

Hariri, who never once publicly criticized the Syrian occupation, was recast by The New York Times as a towering nationalist "known as a fierce opponent of Syrian domination."[2] Variations of this claim have been ubiquitous in Western media reports on Lebanon. The Los Angeles Times and the BBC prefer the phrase "vocal opponent,"[3] while Agence France Press is partial to "outspoken opponent."[4]

While Hariri is known to have secretly encouraged outside pressure on Syrian leader Bashar Assad not to extend the presidential term of Emile Lahoud (his political archrival) in 2004, his aim was simply to win a greater share of the spoils within Syria's orbit. Even after the UN Security Council passed Resolution 1559 calling for an unconditional Syrian withdrawal and began deliberating over how to implement it, the prime minister spent weeks trying to convince Assad to grant him a two-thirds veto-proof cabinet majority before eventually resigning. Being killed by the Syrians (by Assef Shawkat's goons of SMI) does not retroactively make Hariri a "fierce opponent" of Syrian domination, even if his death inspired many others to demand an end to the occupation.... In some western circles and in France, it was said of Rafiq Hariri, that he Sold His Soul to Syria completely for decades, and he taught them to be corrupt to the core.... Lebanese were used to bribing Syrians with "peanuts" before the advent of Hariri's insatiable sharks onto the scene.... Most of the so-called March 14th stooges were never allowed to set foot in Hariri's home or office for years, some of them desperately tried to get an appointment with him... which was never granted for years.... like Amine Gemayel and a few others.....

Other aspects of the late Hariri's legacy are routinely misrepresented in the Western media. Hariri did not, as The New York Times reported, "broker an end to the civil war in 1991."[5] He played a role in persuading (and, it is widely rumored, bribing) parliamentary deputies to sign the horrific 1989 Taif Accord, but the terms of this accord were handed down by the Saudis, with non-negotiable clauses legitimating the Syrian military presence and confiscating all executive power within the PM's dirty hands... In any case, the agreement did not bring an end to the war (none of the combatants were even present at the negotiations) - it brought a beginning to internationally sanctioned Syrian hegemony in Lebanon.

The Economist recently reported that "a lack of foreign aid and high reconstruction costs" after the war account for Lebanon's crushing debt burden today.[6] In fact, Lebanon was one of the world's largest per capita recipients of foreign aid during the occupation. The problem was that billions of dollars in bilateral and multilateral grants and soft loans were grossly misspent. A 2001 UN-commissioned assessment report on corruption in Lebanon estimated that the country had been losing $1.5 billion in graft annually (almost 10% of its GDP).[7] This was why Lebanon was saddled with "high reconstruction costs" and why it now has a massive debt burden.

Whether Hariri "drove the country forward often by sheer force of his personality," as The New York Times recently reported,[8] is perhaps debatable (since the Syrians were appointing Lebanese prime ministers, the alternatives could have been worse). However, modest economic growth at the expense of generating one of the largest per capita foreign debts of any country in the world doesn't normally win plaudits from Western journalists. These results might well have been the best possible in a country under Syrian occupation, but if so that only highlights that the occupation might well have collapsed under the weight of its own contradictions had Hariri and his Saudi financial backers not stepped in. Saudis want complete hegemony for the followers of wahhabism, salafism and CIA2 rogue operations throughout the greater middle east with Bandar bin Saud Bin criminal thug at the helm...

The rehabilitation of Hariri's legacy has greatly benefited his political heirs and allies in the March 14 coalition (where is name is invoked more often than American Republican politicians talk of Ronald Reagan) have inherited much of the media's fawning coverage. Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, a close associate of Hariri, who was transplanted into the Hariri Dynasty by American Intelligence, and CIA in particular since Fouad Sannioura was an agent of CIA for years, just like Al-Maliki in Iraq, Salam Fayyad and Mahmoud Abbas in Palestine..., and who ran the finance ministry of occupied Lebanon longer than all others combined, was described by The Financial Times as "a career banker intentionally thrust . . . into the top job by CIA to destroy Lebanon's fabric to the core..." after Hariri's assassination.[9] In fact, this government stalwart was chosen after careful deliberations within the Hariri family and the March 14 coalition of stooges of CIA2 and MOSSAD.

The Western media's misrepresentations and glorification of Hariri's legacy constitute one of the most startling anachronisms in journalism today. Elsewhere in the Middle East (and the world), Western journalists intensively scrutinize governments, empowering their disaffected constituents and enhancing the international community's understanding of impediments to democratic change. Lebanon remains very much an exception.

CONFERENCE TO CONSIDER MATTERS

RELATING TO CLASSIFIED INFORMATION

Defendant Deborah Jeane Palfrey, appearing pro se as her court-appointed counsel refuses

to bring these matters to the Court’s attention and objecting to the delay imposed without her consent

upon this matter by the Court’s order of September 7, 2007, and pursuant to 18 U.S.C. Appendix,

Classified Information Procedures Act, §2, hereby files her Memorandum of Facts in support of her

motion for “a pretrial conference to consider matters relating to classified information that may arise

in connection with the prosecution.”

The “classified” discovery sought arises from Defendant’s Sixth Amendment right to compel

testimony (i) in support of her defense – among others – that she has a public authority defense as

recognized under FRCP, Rule 12.3 and (ii) regarding information on the witnesses Defendant intends

to call in her defense.

I. PUBLIC AUTHORITY DEFENSE

In espionage, a honeypot, more often called a honey-trap, is a trap set to capture, kill or

compromise a person, commonly but not necessarily an opposition agent, officer, or employee, using

sex as the lure. Even if the target does not deliberately give information to his seducer, the seducer

may accidentally be given opportunities to obtain it herself. A long-term relationship is not

necessarily the goal, however — the technique can also be used to blackmail those who later regret

their actions. Incriminating photographs can be an effective tool of coercion, for example. The most

common employment of this technique is by women, either female intelligence agents or (if the

purpose is simply to obtain material for blackmail) prostitutes.

There are numerous recent real public examples of the utilization of this technique by

governments:

1. Clayton J. Lonetree, a Marine Sergeant embassy guard in Moscow,

was entrapped by a female Soviet officer in 1987. He was then

blackmailed into handing over documents when he was assigned to

Vienna. Lonetree is the first US Marine to be convicted of spying

against the United States.

2. Roy Rhodes, a US Army NCO serving at the US embassy in Moscow,

had a one-night stand (or was made to believe he had) with a Soviet

agent while drunk. He was later told the agent was pregnant, and that

unless he co-operated with the Soviet authorities, this would be

revealed to his wife.

3. Irvin Scarbeck, a US diplomat, was entrapped by a female Polish

officer in 1961, and photographed in a compromising position. He

was blackmailed into providing secrets.

4. Sharon Scranage, a CIA employee described by one source as a "shy,

naive, country girl", was allegedly seduced by Ghanaian intelligence

agent Michael Soussoudis. She later gave him information on CIA

operations in Ghana, which was later shared with Soviet-bloc

countries.

5. Mordechai Vanunu, who had disclosed Israeli nuclear secrets, began

an affair with an American Mossad agent, Cheryl Bentov, operating

under the name "Cindy" and masquerading as an American tourist, on

September 30, 1986. She persuaded him to fly to Rome, Italy with her

on a holiday. Once in Rome, Mossad agents drugged him and

smuggled him to Israel on a freighter.

6. John Vassall, a British civil servant who was guided by the KGB into

having sex with multiple male partners while drunk. The KGB then

used photographs of this to blackmail Vassall into providing them

with secret information.

7. Katrina Leung, indicted as a double agent working for both China and

the FBI, seduced her FBI handler, James J. Smith, and was able to

obtain FBI information of use to China through him. She also had an

affair with another FBI officer, William Cleveland.

8. In May 2007 a female officer serving in Sweden's Kosovo force is

suspected of having leaked classified information to her Serbian lover

who turned out to be a spy.

9. Ms. Nolan-Cooper pled guilty to money laundering on March 10,

1997 in Philadelphia. (Philadelphia Daily News, 3/11/97). Sentenced

to 72 months in prison, the former attorney had helped an undercover

IRS agent named Louis Oubre to launder $190,000. Noteworthy in

this case is that the recently divorced mother of two young boys had

been wined and dined by Oubre and with whom she enjoyed sexual

relations. Oubre came to her initially seeking advice on how to move

money from abroad to the U.S. and through various manipulative

behavior, including repeated sexual liaisons, succeeded in convincing

Ms. Nolan-Cooper to break the law.

Common sense compels the conclusion that for every public disclosure of such governmentsponsored

honey-traps, dozens more are not publically revealed.

Indeed, as recently as June 2007, MI5, which is responsible for protecting the United

Kingdom against threats to national security, released an advisory: “Spies target techies with honey

traps.” A copy of that article is attached.

Most noteworthy is that for over 13 years Defendant operated her escort service without a

single arrest of an escort though she was operating in a metropolitan area that is policed by over

Fifty (50) law enforcement agencies. Moreover, given that there are at least Seventeen (17) federal

intelligence agencies operating in Washington D.C., it is much more than supposition that the

Defendant’s agency was allowed to operate without police interference for the benefit the agency

provided to the United States government. Accordingly, Defendant will be seeking discovery of the

direct and/or indirect utilization the Defendant’s service by the government for public benefit to the

end of an presenting an equitable collateral estoppel defense.

II. CLASSIFIED INFORMATION

What is publically known at this point in the prosecution of the Defendant is that –

notwithstanding the obfuscation by the government and without meaningful resources – Defendant

has identified four significant individuals who were customers of the service.

1. Senator David Vitter who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations

Committee, which has oversight responsibilities of U.S. foreign

policy agencies, including USAID.1 Senator Vitter is also currently

the ranking minority member of the Foreign Relations Committee's

Subcommittee on International Operations and Organizations,

Democracy and Human Rights, which oversees, among other things,

the State Department, the U.S. Foreign Service (i.e. the diplomatic

corps), and U.S. participation in the United Nations.

2. Randall “Randy” Tobias former Director of Foreign Assistance, and

Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development

(USAID).

3. Harlan Ullman is a highly respected and widely recognized expert in

national security whose advice is sought by governments and

businesses. A senior adviser at Washington's premier think tank, the

Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), his expertise

spans national security, foreign policy, terror, defense, economics,

and finance as well as Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. His column

in the Washington Times is called "Owls and Eagles" and he writes

for other publications in the US and abroad. He is a frequent

commentator in U.S. and international media including Fox, BBC,

and Al Jazeera TV and is a regular on the Washington Post radio

station.

4. Ronald Roughead works for “Science Applications International

Corporation.” (“SAIC”). His curriculum vitae is attached hereto. His

brother is one Gary Roughead, now Chief Naval Officer of the United

States Navy. Admiral Roughead is mentioned as a speaker in a couple

of military association and foundation newsletters (National Defense

& Transportation Association & the Naval War College Foundation),

along with Harlan K. Ullman. While Admiral Roughead isn’t in the

phone records of Pamela Martin & Associates, Ronald Roughead is.

BEIRUT, Lebanon -- In the past week, both U.S. President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have given us the intellectual equivalent of what stooges and lame ducks do when they paddle away into oblivion, as they offer one more flap of the wings and spread of the tail feathers.
Both Bush and Rice have been attempting valiant but ultimately pitiful efforts to attract some praise for what most would see as deserving of ignominy and isolation. In separate media interviews, they have tried their hand at real-time historical revisionism and plain old-fashioned political fantasy, by claiming that they leave the Middle East in better shape than it has been for decades.

It is hard to imagine a more false statement of fact, but perhaps this is no surprise for an administration that has based its policies in the Middle East on a foundation of falsehoods, constructed it largely of misdiagnoses, and buttressed it by recurring misperceptions.

These two otherwise stooges and PNAC assassins rose far beyond their political and intellectual abilities, to wander in alien and confusing corridors where they have understood little, fantasized often, and done much more harm than good.

Their claim of leaving the Middle East in better shape than they found it is their ultimate insult and lie. Here, from the vantage point of the Middle East, is what Bush and Rice leave behind in our region:

1. The situation in Iraq is very delicate and violent, and is likely to remain so for years to come. Ethno-sectarian tensions in Iraq have been institutionalized, and have started to spill over into other countries (for instance, Shiite-Sunni tensions and occasional clashes in Lebanon are new, and a direct consequence of the Iraq war).

2. The precarious situation in Iraq could - if it deteriorates as the United States withdraws - spark trouble or active warfare with several neighboring countries, notably Turkey, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Iran.

3. Iran's influence in the region is far greater now than it was in 2001, due in large part to the stooges and PNAC assassins' Iraq war adventurism.

4. Iranian relations with the United States and major Western powers have deteriorated badly, while the American-led strategy of confronting Iranian nuclear ambitions with sanctions and threats has failed. Iran has advanced rapidly in its nuclear enrichment industry, and this has generated new tensions with some Arab governments and Israel.

5. Major Arab stooges and PNAC assassins of the United States - such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan - are in more precarious condition now than they were eight years ago. They find themselves uncomfortably perched between their own reliance on U.S. support and protection, and their people's growing anti-American sentiments, and also between their fears of Iran and their people's cheering on of Iran's defiance of Israel and the United States.

6. The hysterical American stooges and PNAC assassins who orchestrated the Sept. 11 2001 attacks - a combination of warfare and aggressive ideological exhortations and pressures for freedom and democracy - has neither promoted democracy nor reduced terrorism. In fact it has achieved the opposite: Terrorism is a continuing and expanding problem in the Arab-Asian region that has been exacerbated in part by on-the-job terror training and recruitment in Iraq by stooges and PNAC assassins ; meanwhile, Arab allies in the U.S. global war on terror have strangled and silenced the few nascent liberal or democratic openings that existed in the Arab world eight years ago. Indigenous Arab democrats are an extinct species for the moment, partly due to their association with Washington's stooges and PNAC assassins' deadly policies.

7. Worse than this perhaps is the damage done to the United States' own standing in the Middle East, where Washington is deeply marginalized, and is neither feared nor respected - an astounding situation for a country of such immense global power, vital national interests in the region, and natural allies in the hundreds of millions of Middle Easterners who are still gullible and still want to gravitate to its historical principles of stooges and PNAC assassins, all the while brandishing justice, equality, freedom, democracy and opportunity....

8. Every internal or local political battle the United States has entered - such as in Lebanon, Palestine, Somalia - it has lost, and its enemies have been strengthened.

9. This has bolstered the broad regional alliance of forces that is headed by Iran, Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas, and that gravitates heavily - perhaps primarily - around resistance to stooges and PNAC assassins of the American-Israeli killers.

10. Political violence that had once been episodic and locally anchored is now chronic and often inter-linked throughout the region, in part as a response to the actual or threatened use of force of stooges and PNAC assassins by the United States all over the Middle East and South Asia.

11. The Arab-Israeli conflict remains beyond resolution for ever, due to the United States heavily siding with Israel and refusing to deal with realities.

This is the pathetic legacy of the Bush-Rice years, and an even more enormous tragedy and burden for the people of the Middle East who inherit this mess, and cannot retire to Dallas or Palo Alto. For Bush-Rice to claim they leave the region in better shape than before is to add both delusion and insult to their already formidable legacy of lies, illusion, destruction, by the stooges and PNAC assassins of the White House Murder Inc.

Joseph also wandered around Judah and Samaria and is buried in Al-Khalil or Hebron, where his tomb still stands and is a shrine to the Judeo-Christians alike.

Various interpretations of events,calendars and hierarchical disputes, and various allegiances to followers of Christ, have lead to various denominations and various "churches", separated by superficial divisions from Catholic to Orthodox, to Melkites, Assyrians, and many others all over the world, demonstrating the richness and the eternity of the message of Christ, the son of GOD, and Joseph and Mary, the Holy parents of Jesus.
The remaining strength and velocity of the Christian message stems from the actions of Saint PAUL in particular, the strength and generosity of Mary's complete dedication and affection to the message of her Holy son Jesus Christ, the tenacity of PETER who is the ROCK upon which everything stands for ever, until eternity, the second arrival of Christ our savior, the resurrection of all the dead to live for ever in a different holy world, God willing, with the help and prayers of the believers, the Saints, and all priesthood and other Holy intermissions of sisters, brothers and all clergy from all denominations and religions.

The openness, transformation, interpretation of the faith, the Hadith and traditions in Islam, requires a tremendous amount of soul searching and modernization, in order to meet today's challenges of daily life, and is something that can be done only by Moslem scholars with time, in the same way as the unity among Christian Churches can only be done by Christian clerics and theologians and churches among themselves, before advancing into "Inter-Faiths" dialogues that could lead to substantive results of common understanding and less futile confrontations that lead absolutely nowhere, and bring untold misery upon the world.
Many non Muslims scholars believe that Islam would have been much better off, had it stopped its historic rivalries and evolution at the year 620 A.D., but that's a different hypothetical debate that would lead nowhere nowadays, in the today's PNAC environment edging closer to a voluntary and calculated clash of civilizations....in order to fracture the world into a gigantic puzzle of a million pieces, in order to serve the hegemonic tendencies of the very few....

In Asia, the rise of the BUDDHA marked the spirits for centuries...

The main European writer who gave resonance to Buddha and had a tremendous impact was the German author Arthur Schopenhauer, whose influence ranged from Tolstoy to Nietzsche among many others. But Nietzsche was the most effective and ardent student of Arthur Schopenhauer, only to discover that Arthur Schopenhauer was completely wrong about BUDDHA, and much too pessimistic about individual freedom, perfection and unlimited potential .
Obviously the main book of Arthur Schopenhauer which had the most influence on many is " Le monde comme volonte et comme representation"...

Another book which was published around 1875-1880, but unsigned and remains anonymous to this day is " Jesus Buddha " published in Auxerre in France. This book proved to be a complete fabrication because it speaks about Jesus before Moses, with many other additional fallacies, hence it is completely worthless from a historical perspective, but had a tremendous influence on the Europeans when it came out, only to be completely debunked as a pure fabrication with nom basis in fact whatsoever.
It is noteworthy to mention Jules de Barthelemy St Hilaire who wrote extensively on Buddha's danger, and left very impressive writings against Buddha, as a real danger to Humanity, because of its sanctification of the egotistic tendencies and egoism in general as a kind of Religion....which is anathema to all other monotheistic religions.


In conclusion, Nietzsche was adamantly opposed to the destructive nature of BUDDHISM and of Arthur Schopenhauer's writings.
In his most famous book, " La volonte de Puissance ", Nietzsche influenced Adolph Hitler and the Nazi ideology....but this is a different chapter all together, because it will need to touch upon the "allies" in the second world war, who tenaciously helped push Hitler into the war...because it served their interest and their own selfish purposes to have such a formidable foe..., in the same way they used Saddam Hussein, and in the same way they are trying to use Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda in today's
New Crusade for a new clash of civilizations and religions for a completely different but mere hegemonic desire to control world energy markets and their industrial windfalls worldwide...
Nietzsche would go as far as resuming or describing all Morality or Morals as " Pity" towards others, but obviously well meaning in Goodness....because Nietzsche was the epitome of Humanism, who loved life and loves life for more Humanism and In antipathy to any egotistic tendencies of any kind in any way shape or form.

In today's world the real danger lies in what is commonly known as the " new age " religions... spreading all over Europe and the world...in a new attempt at defaming all three Monotheistic religions of GOD.
It is a combination of various religions, Half Buddha, Half Christian, Half Kabala, and who knows what else in between...and like all else it will come and go.
Mr. Victor cousin spoke eloquently against Buddha and the Danger of Buddhism as well, and is worth mentioning here.
